Getting there & parking
Embark on your journey through the West Entrance in Joshua Tree, where the desert begins to unfold its ancient secrets. Alternatively, the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms offers a quieter, more contemplative approach, while the South Entrance near I-10 invites you to rise from the low desert into a striking wonderland of stone and sky. The North Entrance typically rewards the patient traveler with shorter queues. The park welcomes you at any hour, a timeless sanctuary open 24/7, requiring only an entrance pass to unlock its vast, silent expanses. As the golden light of late afternoon begins to fade, be mindful that parking can become a rare treasure, particularly during holidays, spring break, and weekends from October through May. Keys View, a pinnacle of the park's breathtaking vistas, draws many at sunset, and with no overflow parking available, arriving early ensures your place among the clouds.
What to bring
When preparing for a trip to Joshua Tree, especially for night photography, it is essential to pack carefully. Bring a stable tripod and a remote shutter release to eliminate camera shake during long exposures. A red light or red-filtered headlamp is required to preserve your night vision while navigating the dark. Dress in warm layers, as desert temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. You must also carry plenty of water and food, as there is no running water available within the park's interior. Finally, be sure to download offline maps before you arrive, as cell reception is extremely limited throughout the park.
