Visit tips
Before you go
- Best time of day
- Golden hour and clear, moonless nights
- Getting there & parking
- To reach Julian and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park from San Diego, take I-8 East to CA-79 North. The park is located about 50 miles east of San Diego and 15 miles south of Julian. If you are visiting on a fall weekend, plan to arrive early as Main Street parking in Julian and popular trailheads fill up quickly. For those interested in night photography, day-use lots inside the state park close at sunset, so you will need to camp overnight. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park offers two main family campgrounds, Paso Picacho and Green Valley, which feature picnic tables, fire rings, and access to restrooms. Reservations can be made in advance through ReserveCalifornia. Additionally, visitors are permitted to park in legal turnouts along the highway to access trails for free.
- What to bring
- When preparing for your trip, be sure to pack plenty of layers, as temperatures can drop quickly in the evenings. Bring an ample supply of water and high-energy snacks to keep you fueled throughout your visit. A versatile landscape lens is highly recommended for capturing the stunning scenery. Additionally, it is essential to download offline maps before you arrive, as cell service can be quite unreliable in the area. If you plan on doing any night photography, a red flashlight is a must-have to help you navigate in the dark without disrupting your night vision.
