Getting there & parking
Mount Soledad in La Jolla offers a drivable summit with free memorial-lot parking and walking paths to different viewpoints, including 360-degree panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego, and the surrounding mountains. Arrive early for sunset crowds, as the small parking lot can fill up quickly. Cowles Mountain requires a steep, 3-mile round-trip hike starting from the Golfcrest Drive trailhead, which features an elevation gain of over 900 feet to reach the highest point in the city of San Diego. Mount Soledad Natural Park closes from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
What to bring
When preparing for a summit outing, it is essential to pack warmer layers, such as a windbreaker or insulated jacket, as temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations. Be sure to bring plenty of food and drinks, including high-energy snacks and sufficient water to stay hydrated throughout your hike. Additionally, always carry a reliable light source, like a headlamp or flashlight, along with extra batteries, in case your return trip extends past sunset.
