Visit tips
Before you go
- Best time of day
- Early morning; Lily Pond reflections before 9:30 a.m.
- Getting there & parking
- Reach the Balboa Park Cultural District just north of downtown via Park Boulevard, or use 1549 El Prado for a central rideshare drop-off. Paid parking is enforced daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the district, though it is free on major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lower Inspiration Point offers the first three hours of parking free, with a free ADA-accessible tram looping through the district every 10 to 15 minutes. Paid parking applies elsewhere, with daily rates ranging from $5 to $16 depending on the lot's proximity to the center. Verified City of San Diego residents can register online to receive free parking in general lots and discounts in premium lots. Parking is highly limited on busy weekends and holidays, when taking a rideshare is strongly recommended.
- What to bring
- Be sure to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially during the warm summer months. A fully charged phone is perfect for capturing the early morning scenes, and you can easily use a nearby bench or low wall as a makeshift prop if you don't have a tripod. Additionally, wearing comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended as you explore the park, and a light jacket can be useful for the cooler morning temperatures before the sun fully warms up.
