Field note
Ocean Beach meets the Pacific at San Diego’s western edge, where the concrete fishing pier has long shaped the neighborhood’s horizon.

Built in 1966, the pier became both a gathering place and a landmark for anglers and visitors. Beneath its repeating columns, shifting tide and reflected light turn the structure into a changing frame for the coast.

- When visiting Ocean Beach, be sure to pack a camera to capture the stunning coastal views. A light jacket is essential for the cool ocean breeze, along with sunscreen for sun protection and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. If you plan on exploring the rocky shoreline areas, wear grippy shoes for safety. Additionally, always check a local tide chart before heading out to photograph the tide pools to ensure you arrive at the best and safest time.
