Getting there & parking
For breathtaking panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, drive to Coachella Valley Vista Point on Highway 74, about five miles south of Palm Desert. This scenic overlook is open 24/7 and offers sweeping vistas of Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, and the surrounding Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. On a clear day, you can even spot the northern tip of the Salton Sea. Ample free parking is available, along with a short, paved walkway to the viewing area. The approach up the Pines to Palms Highway is steep and winding with several switchbacks, so drive cautiously. It is an especially popular spot for sunrise and sunset, so plan to arrive early to secure a good vantage point.
What to bring
When visiting the Coachella Valley Vista Point, come prepared for the elements and the remote location. Bring your camera, a wide-angle lens to capture the sweeping valley views, and a sturdy tripod for long exposures during golden hour. Essential personal items include plenty of water, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against the desert sun. Temperatures can drop rapidly after sunset, and the overlook is often windy, so be sure to pack a warm jacket or windbreaker. Please note that there are absolutely no restrooms, trash cans, or other facilities available at the site, so plan your trip accordingly and pack out everything you bring in.
