About this photograph
A wooden staircase leads down toward rocky tide pools as the sun breaks through heavy coastal clouds. Golden light spreads across incoming waves and wet sandstone ledges.
About this place
La Jolla, California
La Jolla stretches along about seven miles of San Diego's Pacific coastline, twelve miles north of downtown. The shore changes dramatically along the way, from 300-foot sea cliffs to rocky reefs, hidden coves and wide golden beaches. Over millennia, waves and slow tectonic uplift carved its soft sedimentary rock into terraces, overhangs and sea caves that shelter seabirds. The Kumeyaay, who lived along these bluffs for thousands of years, are thought to have named the area for those caves, calling it the "land of holes."
